Driving in iceland

Necessary to bear in mind:

  • It is against the law to operate a vehicle in Iceland after having consumed alcohol or other intoxi cants and penalties for violating of these laws are severe.
  • Icelandic law requires that vehicle headlights be turned on at all times, when driving, day and night.
  • During the summer, the sun is visible both day and night and the day seems long. Drivers must be aware of this fact and avoid driving for too long, since they may fall asleep while driving.
  • The law requires the use of handsfree equipment when talking on a mobile phone and driving at the same time.
  • Drive offroad is strictly forbidden to drive offroad. Such driving results in serious damage to sensitive vegetation, which may take decades for the nature to repair.
