The cliff itself is the habitat of millions of seabirds which can be seen on the walk along the edge of the cliff, such as puffins, razorbills, fulmars, guillemots and many more. The bird season is from early-April to late-July. Látrabjarg is claimed to be the best place in the world to photograph puffins because of how close you can get to them on the cliff. This is rare compared to other puffin sites, since it hasn’t been hunted here for decades. As a result the puffin has become extraordinary human friendly. The local guide will take you to an unforgettable hiking tour around the area.
On the way back to Patreksfjörður we will stop at the Heritage Museum at Hnjótur. In this interesting museum we will learn how local people lived in the old days, examine their cultural values, and how they rescued sailors from stranded ships under the steep cliffs.
The tour starts by bus from Westfjords Adventures office in Patreksfjörður, 1-1/2 hour drive to Bjargtangar at Látrabjarg cliff. The hiking is 5-6 hours, hiking distance 14 km, elevation 200 meters. Trip difficulty: Moderate.
Advisable to wear comfortable warm clothing and hiking boots. We recommend that you bring a backpack, snack and water bottle.
